Before forming Toto, its members did session work for Steely Dan,[3] Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. Five guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's singer.
About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Despite their popularity the group had to face a number of difficulties in their later years. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health issues. Shem von Schröeck took over however the band was not the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a couple of years. The group returned to touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return form for the band and the tour was accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
